Nostalgia Breakfast...Cinnamon Toast

Updated: Jul 27, 2020

One of my favorite breakfasts growing up was cinnamon toast.

Toasted bread with a light sweet crusting from butter, sugar, and cinnamon.

Before canned cinnamon rolls, there was cinnamon toast.

My mom was not a get up at 4 a.m to bake bread lady. She was a nurse that worked nights at the hospital. Breakfast in the morning was brief. A bowl of cereal, maybe a bacon and egg sandwich to go. If you got up on time you might could get a waffle in. So unless it was the weekend, breakfast was a matter of convenience.

Cinnamon toast is still a favorite in my house. Not only is it delicious, it actually satisfies your taste buds with it's combination of warm and sweet with a hint of spice. Back then my siblings could put away a whole loaf of white bread. We would each get 4 pieces, and a mug of hot chocolate. We went to school full and ready to take on the day.

Today when I make it, I use whole grain honey wheat bread which gives it a nutty flavor when toasted. It totally works and helps to balance out the sweetness from the sugar. The measurements below are approximates. Add more or less of the cinnamon and sugar to your liking. Okay, no more blog gabbing here is the official recipe:

 Ingredients

  • 4 slices honey wheat bread (any sliced bread will be fine)

  • softened butter  - (room temp or bread will tear)

  • 2 Tbsp. cinnamon (total for all 4 slices)

  • 2 Tbsp. granulated sugar (total for all 4 slices)

Directions:

Preheat Oven to 425 Degrees

Spread softened butter on top of each slice of bread.

Sprinkle enough cinnamon to cover bread

(a light to med dusting is enough)

Approx. 1 tsp of sugar to top each slice - (less or more to your liking)

Your bread will have a very rustic unfinished look before toasting.

Place bread on a baking sheet or pan

Put bread in preheated toaster oven or oven broiler

(DON'T LEAVE THE KITCHEN!)

The top will melt quickly from the direct high heat.

Cooking time is approximate (1- 1.5 min.)

When butter and sugar melts and a slight crust forms turn toast over and put back into oven.

Don't worry. The top side will not melt off.

The sugar, butter and cinnamon will form a light crust.

(Top side should be melted and appear "slightly" wet but should not be runny so it doesn't slide off when you turn it over.)

Lightly toast plain side of bread

for (30 sec - 1 min)

Remove toast from oven. Eat warm.

You can add a tad bit more butter to top off toast. ( optional)

That's it! You were expecting more? Okay 1 more photo.

ENJOY!

with bacon :)
